Words About Books: Biblioklept

Wednesday, 7 April 2010 Leave a comment Go to comments

We’ve got an unabridged dictionary which is a fantastic source for all sorts of interesting words. This morning I was looking for bookish words and found this one:

bib·li·o·klept   [bib-lee-uh-klept] –noun

a person who steals books.

Origin:
1880–85; biblio- + Gk kléptēs thief; see kleptomania

In light of all the security precautions in place at libraries and bookshops, there are plenty of biblioklepts out there.

Here’s an article from 2001 about people who steal books.
