Wicked by Gregory Maguire

Fiction: Fantasy/Sci Fi. Paperback from Regan Books. Published in 1995. 406 pages. From PaperBackSwap.

My Mom told me before I read this book that the original Wizard of Oz was an allegory, and so I got to wondering as I read if I was missing out on some of that in this book. But, a bit of research on Wikipedia seems to indicate that there is some controversy about whether the original was an allegory or not. So, I suppose I’ll just pretend that this telling is just a story and not worry that I did not catch any possible allegorical aspects of it.

I enjoyed this book, though it was colored by the fact that I knew the main character was going to die at the end. Gregory Maguire certainly made her likable and thus it was hard to know she would be killed off in the end.

A fun read and a good reminder that there are often two sides to a story and that it is easy to misinterpret someone else’s intentions.

Publisher’s summary:
When Dorothy triumphed over the Wicked Witch of the West in L. Frank Baum’s classic tale, we heard only her side of the story. But what about her arch-nemesis, the mysterious witch? Where did she come from? How did she become so wicked? And what is the true nature of evil?

Gregory Maguire creates a fantasy world so rich and vivid that we will never look at Oz the same way again. Wicked is about a land where animals talk and strive to be treated like first-class citizens, Munchkinlanders seek the comfort of middle-class stability and the Tin Man becomes a victim of domestic violence. And then there is the little green-skinned girl named Elphaba, who will grow up to be the infamous Wicked Witch of the West, a smart, prickly and misunderstood creature who challenges all our preconceived notions about the nature of good and evil.
