Prayer by Philip Yancey
Non-Fiction: Christianity|Prayer. Audio from Zondervan. Published in 2006. 11 hours, 18 minutes. Read by Larry Black. Purchased at Audible.com.

Subtitled: “Does it Make Any Difference”, I found this to be a very well balance treatment of prayer. It does not take the “God as a Pez dispenser” view, nor does it discount the effectiveness of prayer. I’d highly recommend this book to the Christian looking for insights and answers on prayer.
As an aside, I purchased the hardback copy of this book when it came out, but just never managed to make the time to sit down and read it. So, I got the audio version from Audible. While I felt like the editors had zapped out every pause the reader took for breath, making it difficult to tell at times when he was reading a section heading, it is a well done audiobook. I did want to mention that although it says it is “unabridged”, there are many insets on prayer in the book that are not included on the audio recording.
Publisher’s summary:
In his most powerful book since What’s So Amazing About Grace? and The Jesus I Never Knew, Philip Yancey probes the most fundamental, challenging, perplexing, and deeply rewarding aspect of our relationship with God: What is prayer? How does it work? And, more importantly, does it work?
Written by one of the most significant Christian thinkers of our generation, Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference? explores the questions surrounding prayer that many of us wonder about but few of us know how to express. Above all, this book teaches us how to pray to a God who sees what lies ahead of us, knows what lies within us, and who invites us into an eternal partnership through prayer.

Here is an overview of the book that I found on YouTube. It’s basically just a commercial for the book, but it is well done.
